Ecumenism

Reverend Sun Myung Moon, founder of the “Unification Church” and its multi-billion dollar financial Empire on the claim that Christ had given to him the title of “Messiah”, died today, leaving behind a syncretistic religion of about five to seven million followers. He was 92.

Moon at Ascension Church (MP), Moscow. One hopes he was not, on beholding the icons, thinking “hello, my children”.

Moon was famous for his mass-wedding ceremonies where he personally chose spouses and presided. One of the most well-known of these weddings was the marriage of Roman Catholic Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, which was done over the protests of the Pope and led to the formation of a religious group advocating for married clergy.

Over the years, Moon’s Unification Church, while increasingly syncretistic in outlook (likely due to the fact that Christian denominations had a problem with a religion whose founder claimed to be the Messiah) became more established with political leaders and non-Christian religions worldwide such as Islam. Belief in himself and his second wife as “the True Parents” was a part of the religion until the end, including a bizarre belief that he was the second coming of Christ, but that he was even better than the first one because he was married. (I really wish I was making that up.)

The Guardian reports Moon’s children will not become involved as “future messiahs”, but as “apostles of his teaching”. The Scriptures, of course, record that “it is the last hour; and as you have heard that Antichrist cometh, even now there are become many Antichrists: whereby we know that it is the last hour”. (1 Jn 2:18) One almost expects future “messiahs-to-be” to have, in our fallen age, even more success than Reverend Moon.
