The New Metropolitan Anthony Gavalas, born in 1942 in New York, comes from Kalymnos. From a young age he grew up and was raised in a Christian family with his father being a Commissioner Strain Chanter and Templar. He studied with masters in Educational Psychology. He also studied theology at the Theological School of the Holy Cross, Boston.

He worked as a teacher for many years and from which he retired. Married the pious lady and all of Presbytera Theodora, who died last October at age 67, after an unequal battle with cancer. Gained with the elders of 3 daughters (Catherine, Mary, John) and 1 son (Basil).

His ordination to Deacon and priest was on the 6th December 1970 by the then Bishop of Manhattan Laurus of the ROCOR (later Metropolitan, ROCOR-MP). In 1997 he joined with his parishoners to the Holy Synod of Abp Nicholas, and remains a faithful child of this. Metropolitan New York was elected by the Holy Synod of Bishops on 4th May and ordained Bishop on May 18 in the Cathedral St. Andrew in Piraeus.
