True Orthodoxy in Greece

Editor’s Correction: Fr. David (Belden) was not present, among the four present in Woodstock. We are sorry for any inconvenience and mistakes in reporting.

Editor’s Correction #2: Only Fr George Kochergin attended of the Five Presbyters. The confusion came from the four Bishops. More apologies!

There was a concelebration last week at the Holy Ascension Monastery in Woodstock. There was also a groundbreaking for the monastery catholicon. All four of the Bishops of the GOC-Kallinikos in America were present.

The full press release is below:

Holy Ascension Monastery in Bearsville, N. Y., was founded in 1999 by His Eminence Metropolitan PAVLOS to be the spiritual center of the Holy Metropolis of the GOC of America. His Eminence Metropolitan PAVLOS chose to dedicate the new spiritual center of the Metropolis to the Holy Ascension to honor his predecessor Metropolitan PETROS of blessed memory.

Before coming to America Geronda PETROS was a monk at the Skete of St. Anna on the Holy Mountain Athos. The cell that Geronda PETROS occupied at that skete had a chapel that was dedicated to the Holy Ascension. Before establishing Holy Ascension Monastery, Metropolitan PAVLOS paid a visit to the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mount Athos and asked the Hegumenos (Fr. Euthymios of Blessed Memory) to suggest a name for the new monastery in America. The Hegumenos suggested, “Holy Ascension.”

Fr. Maximos, the abbot of the Monastery, recently announced plans for the construction of a new Church for the Monastery. Many pilgrims attended the Divine Liturgy last Thursday, the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord. Metropolitan Pavlos, Metropolitan Moses, Bishop Christodoulos and Bishop Sergius were there for the Divine Liturgy and the groundbreaking for the new Church. Photos taken by the pilgrims can be viewed at:

The Presbyters and faithful of the Toronto parishes of St. Nektarios, Panagia and St. Joseph of Arimathea, wish Fr. Maximos and his synodia, many years and strength from God.

In Christ,

+Fr. Panagiotes
