NFTU: It seems there are few heresies Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev), of the Moscow Patriarchate, second hand of Patriarch Kyril, will not court. His career has mainly been made courting Papism, then various branches of Continuing Anglicans and the Monophysites; it finally comes to “Evangelical” Protestantism (it is a real stretch to say it is ‘Evangelical’, since it has nothing to do with the Gospel teaching). Met. Hilarion traditionally acts as a sort of ‘foreign secretary’ for the MP. Met. Hilarion’s speech (which can be found here) states he wishes to minimize the differences:
“We believe that Christian Churches, unlike politicians, should never squander their peacemaking potential. We have at our disposal special means which overcome boundaries, both geographical and ideological.”
In the entire speech no where does he bring up the unequivocal fact that the Orthodox Church is the only True Church of Jesus Christ. And he certainly didn’t want to reference St. Cyprian’s “extra Ecclesiam nulla salus”. So all we have left with are generalized moral attidudes (which are correct, but are no more than re-stating of what has been believed for thousands of years), some vague and non-particular Scriptural references to confession of Christ, and a general call for cooperation with those who deny the foundations of the Gospel.
