“Green Patriarch” at it again

(Commentary) Once again, Ecumenial Patriarch Bartholomew I has forcefully spoken out on behalf of God’s creation, which we are called to be stewards of. God’s creation should, of course be grateful, and we expect the palms themselves to cry out “hosanna”. Of course, they won’t. In a world filled with widespread evils even in traditionally Eastern Orthodox countries, it’s nice to know that the “Green Patriarch” is keeping in touch with the social ills of our time.

It’s nice to know that as secular Romania discovers the extent of communist control over their society, including the Church, the Green Patriarch tells us what really matters:

“The use of atomic and nuclear forces of nature for war is an insult to creation and Creator, as is over-consumption of any kind, which burdens the natural environment with pollutants, which leads to climate change and global warming and an imbalance in the natural order, with all that implies. The immense consumption of energy for purposes of war and the excessive consumption of contemporary humanity far beyond its needs are two areas where the responsibilities of political leaders and common citizens are interwoven in such a way so that each of us has the power to contribute to the betterment of the general condition.”

I found Thomas Sowell’s comment on the environment this week very apropos for a response: “Climate statistics show that, with all the “global warming” hysteria today, our temperatures are still not as high as they were back in medieval times. Those medieval folks must have been driving a lot of cars and SUVs.”

It’s so nice to see people still keeping things in perspective. Sadly, none of them seem to be part of the official Orthodox hierarchy worldwide.
