Hey, kids! It’s time for– Ecumenism!

Spread the love

Flashback. In an encyclical issued at the Fourth General Assembly of the Archdiocese (New York City, November 14 – 20, 1931), the Archbishop requested that the “Philoptochos plan many events for the entire family, featuring music, lectures, performances, sponsoring bazaars and the Saint Basil’s pita, requesting a small admission fee and including a raffle. For the children, develop a separate club under your Chapter, which should have its own President, present children’s observances and meetings, so that the youth will become accustomed to your good example and will be of greater interest to them.”

Maybe they need the JP’s youth to get involved. A Press release from the GOA on World Faith News:

ECUMENICAL ASSEMBLY SEEKS ORTHODOX YOUNG ADULTS TO SERVE AT ANNUAL MEETING

Orthodox Young Adults are invited to apply to serve as Stewards at the 2008 General Assembly of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. and Church World Service. The Assembly, which convenes annually in a different U.S. city to bring together the ecumenical leadership of the Council’s 35 member communions, will meet November 11-13 in Denver, Colorado. His Grace, Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, is chairman of the Planning Committee for the 2008 Assembly.

A key part of the General Assembly is the Young Adult Stewards program. Young adults, ages 18 ? 30, frrom all of the member communions help with the organization and management of the Assembly, and observe and join in the proceedings.

John Paterakis, a member of the CWS Board of Directors, explained â??Successful candidates will have the opportunity to interact with top leadership of the NCCCUSA and Church World Service, as well as to work closely with members of the Orthodox delegations such as Bishop Demetrios, Fr. Leonid Kishkovsky, Fr. Mark Arey, and Dr. Despina Prassas.â ??

â??This is a great opportunity to witness to Orthodoxy among representatives of other Christian communions, and to learn firsthand about the ecumenical experience,â?? Paterakis added.

The application is available to be downloaded at http://www.ncccusa.org/ga2008/stewardapplication.pdf. Deadline for submittal is September 12, 2008. Candidates with any degree of seminary training are particularly encouraged to apply.
