Pavel Adelgeim was considered a different kind of “dissident” priest in the MP: unlike those who pretended to emulate the True Orthodox in their protests, Adelgeim was a unique figure in MP clergy in that he very openly described the nature of the Moscow Patriarchate, matter-of-factly, and thus stood as a witness to the nature of the Soviet church in a very subtle way. In a sense, you could say he was one of the most honest of the MP’s dissidents, a dissident who did not so much as protest the evils of the MP so much as live honestly as a member of the Soviet church, peeling off the layers of the appearance of Orthodoxy and revealing the bureaucracy underneath. Worthy of note is the MP’s Andrei Kurayev’s eulogy: “the last free priest of the Moscow Patriarchate has been killed.”
Last year, Adelgeim told the newspaper Dozhd that “the Church cannot be governed by vertical power; the Church is ‘sobornaya,’….The Church hierarchy and the authorities are one and the same outfit. The Russian Orthodox Church is becoming a [government] department … responsible for ideology.”
The man who went to the Lubyanska in Moscow in the 70’s to demand his right to ordination– to the embarrassment of the KGB– would recognize such a shift immediately.
(IBT) An orthodox priest who spoke out in support of the jailed members of punk rock band Pussy Riot has been killed in Russia.
Pavel Adelgeim, 75, was stabbed to death in his house in the city of Pskov, near the Estonian border.
Local police arrested a 27-year-old man, who they said was acquainted with Adelgeim, in relation to the killing.
The suspect reportedly knifed Adelgeim in the stomach and then inflicted stab wounds upon himself after being arrested.
He has been taken to a local hospital where authorities are waiting to interrogate him.
In 2012 he spoke up against the jailing of Pussy Riot members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Katarina Samutsevich, 30, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, who were arrested after staging a controversial musical performance at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
