Cardinal Koch: “Greater unity between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in 2016”

The specific occasion for the trip was the memory of the first East-West Church Summit by Pope Paul VI and the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras in Jerusalem in January 1964, Koch pointed out. The initiative for a renewed encounter in Jerusalem is considered by Patriarch Bartholomew I to be Pope Benedict XVI, who still  has been invited to the meeting, the Cardinal confirmed. Ecumenism stands in the foreground of this papal visit. However, it should not be expected that the trip could solve the current problems of the theological dialogue that would exist with individual patriarchates. “I expect rather that greater unity between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches will be reached at the Pan-Orthodox Synod in 2016.”
