On May 6, 2014, the Ecumenical Patriarchate posted a video explaining the upcoming meeting in Jerusalem between Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Pope Francis. The video highlights that both are ‘great men of the Church’. The video can be found here. The meeting will commemorate 50 years since the meeting between Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras in Jerusalem.
The video, and the upcoming meeting, reflect the continued commitment that the Ecumenical Patriarchate shows to ecumenism and union with Rome. Already communion agreements with non-Orthodox bodies have been reached by the Antiochian Patriarchate and Alexandrian Patriarchate; as well as widespread de facto communion. The upcoming 2016 ‘great council’ being held by the Ecumenical Patriarchate is undoubtedly to greatly accelerate this movement.
