ROCOR (V) Cleric Transfers to Greek Old Calendarists

(NFTU) Fr Mark Smith, a former cleric of the ROCOR under Metropolitan Vitaly, has joined the new “Kirykite” faction of the “Matthewite” Greek Old Calendarists. According to the website, Fr Mark was received into the Church this week through reordination in Greece.

Fr Mark was active first as a deacon, and then as a priest, during and after the split in ROCOR in 2001 in which the First-Hierarch disputed his retirement and later declared the current body of the ROCOR schismatic.

The “Kirykite” Greek Old Calendar Church formed in 2005 when Metropolitan Kirykos of Mesogaia broke from the Synod of the Matthewite Church over claims of Old-Calendar Ecumenism and the invalidity of the election of Metropolitan Nicholas to the Archbishopric of Athens, citing a lapse in his confession of faith during a civil dispute with the local New Calendarist Bishop.
