Metr Hilarion Alfayev’s Freefall Continues
(Source: nexta.tv) Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfayev) of the Moscow Patriarchate has been accused of sexually harassing his 18-year-old cell-attendant, Georgy Suzuki. The allegations come two years after being moved to Hungary due to his vague stance on the war in Ukraine.
Once considered to be a leading candidate as the next Patriarch of Moscow, the scandal further tarnishes the reputation of someone once widely considered one of the most influential writers and speakers in World Orthodoxy today.
In 2022, Hilarion was sent to Hungary and appointed head of one of the church’s smallest dioceses. Months later, Suzuki moved in with Hilarion and became his cell-attendant. According to Suzuki, Hilarion forced him to live together, sleep in the same bed, and threatened him if they broke up.
In January 2024, Suzuki escaped on the pretext of visiting a doctor and went to his family in Japan. A criminal case was opened against him in Hungary for taking an expensive watch and €30 thousand from Hilarion’s house.
Suzuki provided photos and audio recordings that confirm his claims about Hilarion’s threats and showed the clergyman’s luxurious life in Europe. Hilarion also purchased a 2,360-square-meter estate for €2.1 million in the suburbs of Budapest.
